Error: An unknown error occurred (0×666D743F). [iTunes]

Posted in Error Messages, Intermediate, Windows at 5:05 pm by Techie

I figured a good thing for this site would be to post up error messages I receive, as well as how I solved them. After all, I’m not the only one to get random errors, and if I add to useful results in Google, why not?

After installing iTunes 7, I tried launching it, and got this error:

The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (0x666D743F).

That’s awful cryptic. With a little digging, I found that the reason was because I was using Remote Desktop to access my PC remotely while trying to launch iTunes. Apparently, iTunes 7 doesn’t like it when you redirect sound, which is what Remote Desktop Connection tries to do by default. In the Remote Desktop Connection settings, I went to the Local Resources tab, and changed “Remote computer sound” to “Leave at remote computer” and things worked fine.

This error may also occur if you have third party sound plugins, or are otherwise redirecting the audio. For example, if you were using the Volume Logic plugin, you may get this error, or find that the plugin mysteriously stops working (uninstallation of this plugin is recommended until Volume Logic can release a new version). Total Recorder is another program that was causing problems. Also check is in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices; make sure that in the Audio tab that your sound card is selected. Under the Volume tab Speaker settings, click Advanced, and play around with the Speaker setup drop down — try setting it to headphones, for instance, and see if that fixes the problem.

You are exactly right on this one.. Making the changes to the playback options for Total Recorder and Replay Radio fixed the problem ;-) )

Amazingly helpful, thank you so much for posting! After days of changing and closing every other resource (except for the audio device) you helped me solve the problem. Total Recorder as the audio device was the problem.

    Well played!

Thank you so much. I had to uninstall volumelogic and it works fine. Volumelogic are apparently working on a fix to resolve the incompatability.

For me it was “Hardware acceleration” that was killing my iTunes. I had previously turned it off to troubleshoot a gaming problem and forgot about it. To turn it back on go to:

Control Panel -> “Sounds and Audio Devices” -> “Volume” tab -> “Speaker settings” section -> “Advanced” button -> “Performance” tab

Drag “Hardware acceleration” the slider over to the right (to Full).
    Click “Apply” or “OK” button.
    Try loading up iTunes again.

    tada …

That didn’t work for me. I use remote desktop from outside my home like from the airport. Now when I play a song on iTunes, it plays at home. My room mate woke up in the middle of the night when I played Chaiyya Chaiyya loudly.

It still isn’t working for me. Have been playing around with the settings for about 10 minutes. Time to reboot and try again.

It works when I deselect my sound card, but what good is that? It’s using a Realtek AC97 Audio Driver. I will check for an update.

Updated the driver. Nothing. I still couldn’t untick the Safe Mode box. I’ve now gone back to ITunes 6. Thanks Apple for wasting about 4 hours of my life. It may be free software but what else would I use to play my m4a files? If I went live with a system that was tested as bad as that I wouldn’t get a contract again.

Thanks for this! I have something called “Total Recorder” installed that allows me to capture webcasts and burn them. I had the same problem. Turning off Total Recorder in the control panel worked. Thanks mates!

I found that if you start iTunes with the audio left at the host PC and then reconnect with bring to the client PC it works, but still won’t send the audio, which sucks.

After I “deselected” sound under the Local Source Tab of the RDP connection configuration options and told it to Leave At Computer OR Don’t Play, I got my remote connection back as indicated above…

BUT THEN… just for shits and giggles I changed it back to Bring To This Computer, and VOILA, the connection still works! Strange but true, so try it, if you want to listen to your iTunes songs remotely.
